Common Causes of Car Scratches (and How to Avoid Them)

When you discover scratches on your car, you'll want to be proactive about getting them repaired. If you delay, then rust could get the opportunity to set in. At Perfection Auto Refinish, our experienced technicians are experts at fixing scratches. When we're finished, the repaired area will look flawless and you won't be able to tell the scratches were ever there.

What are common ways that cars get scratched?

In many cases, scratches are caused when improper washing materials are used. When washing your car, you should only use non-abrasive materials. Synthetic microfiber washing mitts are an excellent option because they're meant for this sort of task and won't cause scratches. Prior to waxing, it's very important that your car's surface is free of debris. If it isn't, then that debris could get dragged around and cause scratching. Also, although it isn't common, there are cases in which automatic car washes cause scratches. This happens when the brushes in the automatic car wash collect debris from dirty vehicles that doesn't get completely rinsed off between customers. Then that debris can scratch the paint of the next car that goes through the wash. It's worth checking to be sure you're going to an automatic car wash that doesn't have a reputation for this sort of thing.

When you go to the store, it's best to skip over parking spots that will put you tightly squeezed between other vehicles. When you park in such spots, there's a substantially greater risk of someone thoughtlessly swinging open their door and denting/scratching your car. Usually, there's more space toward the back of the parking lot, where there will be less risk of such damage occurring.

You'll also want to be careful about leaning against your car. If you're wearing sharp-edged clothing and then lean against your vehicle, you could scratch the paint as you shift your weight. This could happen without you even realizing it.

Getting "keyed" is another common cause of scratches. These scratches tend to be longer and deeper, making them more difficult to repair. To reduce the chances of your car getting vandalized, it's best if you can park under security cameras or in a garage that has security guards.
